A Colorful Winter Wardrobe

When the temperatures drop the color range of our outfits can tend to go with it. But just because its winter doesn't mean our outfits need to reflect the weather outside. In fact, one of my favorite ways to stave off seasonal depression keep those summer scapes in my closet year-round. But a colorful winter wardrobe does require some thought -- with layering, coat considerations, and winter accessories. I'm here to help with a few key tips on how to carefully curate color. Once you have the formula down you'll be styling seasonal fits like a pro.

This tips are split up into 3 levels, each with increasing color intensity. These color combos are my favorite for winter and you can always fall back on pairing these together, regardless of how far you want to lean into the strategy behind it.

The basics: Incorporate colorful accessories

So, you have the base of your outfit -- top, pants, dress, skirts, etc. -- that can be the typical winter color scheme of blacks or browns. Winter accessories like hats, gloves, tights, and shoes is where you can turn up the saturation. Low-risk, can be a low investment and an easy way to bring in those hues. A monochromatic shade throughout these elements emphasizes intentionality and prohibits crossing the line into "too much."

Level 2: Take it a step further by leaning into a leading color combined with a winter neutral.

You can, of course, add color in to an outfit in more ways than just your accessories. In line with the previous tip, I think sticking with two tones, with one color at the forefront, prevents you from looking like an out-of-place rainbow in the dead of winter. Try adhering to the "Sandwich Method" for these types of looks -- match an element at the top of your look (top, coat, bag) with an element from the bottom half (pants, skirt, tights, shoes). Sandwich a contrasting element in between (in this case the color or the contrast).

Level 3: Create contrast by combining colors opposite of each other on the color wheel.

Choosing colors that oppose each other on the color wheel creates the ultimate juxtaposition. This contrast creates the perfect level of intrigue that makes you look professionally styled (like... how does that look so good?). The perfect formula is a light, muted version of one color with the vibrant version of the other.
